The GEWEX Global Atmospheric System Studies Panel (GASS) will hold its 3rd Pan-GASS Meeting, Understanding and Modeling Atmospheric Processes (UMAP 2022) at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Monterey, CA, USA, from 25-29 July 2022.
UMAP 2022 aims to bring together weather and climate scientists, including both observationalists and modelers, to discuss the key issues of atmospheric science. The program will include all aspects and methods of model development from deterministic numerics to stochastic forcing; process modeling to parametrization; observational constraints to diagnostic techniques; and idealized modeling to operational forecasting and climate predictions. The purpose of the conference is to discuss progress in understanding atmospheric processes and representing them in models, to coordinate current initiatives and make plans for the future.
UMAP 2022 is an in-person meeting and will follow both State and Federal COVID policies. If an in-person meeting is not recommended due to circumstances, UMAP2022 will be postponed to a later date. See our Refund Policy for more information.
UMAP 2022 is articulated around four main themes, outlined below. For each of these themes, we are calling for studies relying on process-oriented diagnostics, modeling, and new observational data, applied to enhance our understanding and modeling capabilities of atmospheric processes and their coupling with the surface. The four main themes are:
Proposals for potential new community projects are particularly welcomed, including proposing a topic and possible approaches OR proposing specific activities in greater detail.

UMAP 2022 has organized three competitions for Early Career Researchers (ECRs). You are deemed an ECR if you are an undergraduate or postgraduate (Masters/PhD) student or a scientist who has received his or her highest degree (BSc, MSc, or PhD) within the past six years. If parental leave fell in this period, up to one year of parental leave time may be added per child, up to a maximum of four years.
In collaboration with the center of Excellence in Simulation of Weather and Climate in Europe (ESiWACE), the GEWEX GASS panel has organized a data analysis contest to encourage the use of the data set of the DYnamics of the Atmospheric general circulation Modeled On Non-hydrostatic Domains (DYAMOND). The winner will receive travel support.
In collaboration with the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the GEWEX GASS panel has organized a contest for ECRs whose studies have used or will use ARM data. The winners will receive travel support.
In collaboration with the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the GEWEX GASS panel has organized a contest where participants will be judged on technical content, technical knowledge of the topic, as well as the oral or poster presentation delivery during the conference.
