ANDEX is the Regional Hydroclimatic Programme for the Andes under the GEWEX Hydroclimatology Panel of the Global Energy and Water Exchanges (GEWEX) Program, one of the core projects of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). It was created in 2018 with the overall objective of improving the understanding and prediction of the climate and hydrology of the Andes Mountains, with the participation of actors from the seven Andean countries: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
ANDEX’s vision is to become a regional hydroclimatic programme of reference constituted by a consolidated and articulated scientific community that responds to the needs of society and contributes to planning and decision-making for the sustainable development of the Andean countries. Water security for Andean populations and high impact hydroclimatic events are its two main themes of research, production and dissemination of knowledge and information.
2024 ANDEX Annual Meeting
The ANDEX Annual Meeting 2024 will take place in Lima, Peru between May 26-29, and will bring together the members of the Scientific Committee, as well as project leaders and collaborators. Its general aims include addressing progress on ANDEX’s Scientific and Implementation Plan to 2033 and deepening the process of consolidating its scientific-academic network and linking with strategic stakeholders.
45th WCRP Joint Scientific Committee Meeting
The 45th meeting of the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee will also be held in Lima from 27 –31 May, providing a unique opportunity for joint work and intra- and inter-institutional coordination. Both meetings are locally organised by IRD-Peru, the Peruvian Geophysical Institute (IGP) and Cayetano Heredia University (UPCH).
Post meeting training activities
In addition, and for the first time since the creation of ANDEX, three simultaneous training activities have been planned for the days following the meeting in Lima.
Between May 30 and June 1, an Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Workshop will be held in Cusco for ANDEX team members. This activity is co-organized with the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD, France).
Meanwhile, a glaciology workshop will be held in Huaraz for master’s and doctoral students, post-docs, and young researchers, as well as technicians from public agencies involved in water management in mountain areas. This activity is organised jointly with the Instituto Nacional de Investigación en Glaciares y Ecosistemas de Montaña (INAIGEM, Peru)
The third activity is a seminar-workshop in Huancayo on physical atmospheric processes in mountain areas, oriented to senior students, graduates or professionals in geography, geophysics and engineering in physics, meteorology, environment, and agronomy. This activity is co-organized with the Instituto de Geología del Perú (IGP).
