9th GEWEX Water Vapor Assessment Workshop

Apr 21 - 23, 2026 | Copenhagen, Denmark

About

The 9th GEWEX Water Vapor Assessment (G-VAP) Workshop is hosted by the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) in Copenhagen, Denmark and will take place from 22-23 April 2026.

The need for quality assessments of Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) Climate Data Records (CDRs) is part of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) guidelines for the generation of data products. The assessment process gives an overview of available data records and enables users to judge the quality and fitness for purpose of CDRs by informing them about the strengths and weaknesses of existing and readily available information. This is achieved by inter-comparison and evaluation, and, if possible, also providing the reasons behind differences and limitations. Assessments of data records related to the global energy and water cycles are an integral part of GEWEX activities over the last decades.

The main objectives of the G-VAP are:

  • Quantifying the state of the art in water vapour products being constructed for climate applications, and, by this
  • Supporting GDAP’s selection process of water vapour products for its generation of globally consistent water and energy cycle products.

All three GCOS Essential Climate Variables on water vapor are considered.

Objectives

Objectives:

It has been a while since the G-VAP community last met. Thus, a key objective is to finally meet again and catch up. Else, the objectives of the 9th G-VAP workshop are to:

  • Discuss latest results from analysis of atmospheric water vapour and its role in the climate system
  • Finalize the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) report on G-VAP results
  • Discuss and plan the future of G-VAP
  • Liaise with related initiatives and projects

Agenda

The preliminary agenda is expected to be available in early March 2026 and can be accessed at https://www.gewexevents.org/meetings/gvap2026/agenda/.

Registration and Abstract Submission
